Maremma, Hills to Coast

Not every Tuscan wine is Sangiovese. Tonight we trace one region, Maremma, from its inland hills near Scansano down to the Bolgheri coast, through two estates that chose international grapes over the variety their neighbors default to.

We start in the hills with two whites from Tenuta Il Quinto's vineyards near Scansano: I Biondi, a citrus-driven Vermentino grown on sandy soils, followed by Sterpeti, a richer, spice-inflected Fiano aged in concrete on fine lees. From there we head to the coast for Il Sette, Poderesette's fresh, varietal Cabernet Franc grown in Bolgheri itself. Back up to the hills for Guardoalto, Il Quinto's Merlot-Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the estate's original plots. Then down to the coast to close, with L'Invidio and finally Il Superbo, Poderesette's flagship expression of the Bolgheri blend.

The wines:

  • Tenuta Il Quinto | I Biondi
  • Tenuta Il Quinto | Sterpeti
  • Poderesette | Il Sette
  • Tenuta Il Quinto | Guardoalto
  • Poderesette | L'Invidio Bolgheri Rosso
  • Poderesette | Il Superbo Bolgheri Superiore
